Verizon's Location Tracking - How to Opt-Out

Verizon is at it again...I wanna know why consumers keep getting tracked by every big company out there?! It would be a little different if their services were being provided for free and supported by advertising. But we pay our hard earned money to these guys and this is how we are rewarded?

Here's how to opt out and keep your location data private:

Log into your Verizon account --> click on "My Verizon" --> Under My Profile click "View All" --> Scroll to the bottom and click "Manage Privacy Settings"

The following page will have 3 sections with 3 save buttons. Make sure to click on the +'s and -'s to get all 3. One is well hidden.

Read this on www.lifehacker.com tonight. Share it with all your friends and family please!!

Google Plus Invitation - Free from Net-Maven

Google+ is a new social networking project that just got rolled out in limited invitation only trial mode this week. Curiosity got the better of me so I started looking around to find out how I could get an invitation. Several sites I found were selling invitations or putting them on Ebay. Then I found a blog post from the owner of Blogdefined.com who was giving them out for free. I got into my Google+ account this morning and now I want to share it with others as Pankja did on his blog.

How to Get a Google+ Invite ?

Step 1: Follow on Facebook or Twitter

* Tweet the following on Twitter.
Free Google Plus (Google+) invites from @Net_Maven - http://goo.gl/3MRxQ #GooglePlus #GooglePlusInvite

* "Become a Fan" on Facebook

Step 2: Send me your Gmail address by one of the three methods below.

* Post a comment below with your email address.
* Send me a private message on Twitter
* Fill in your email address on my contact form at Facebook

I moderate my comments here so your email address is safe from public eyes. Facebook and Twitter as well. Also keep in mind that I will need to send your invitation myself and I work during the day so you may not receive it instantly. But I'll get it out ASAP!

After Receiving Invite

You will receive an invitation by email from me. There will be a Red button "Learn More About Google+" at the bottom. Click this button and it will open up a sign up form where you have to enter your details before logging into Google+. Don't panic if you don't get the signup page. It only means you have to wait a few more hours and try it again. I didn't get it the first time either! I think it works better in the early morning because initially I tried it late at night and it gave me the "Keep me informed" page.

Want more free stuff?

Consider signing up for a DropBox account. We both receive a bonus 250MB if you sign up using my referral link. See my post "Never Email Yourself a File Again!" for more information.

Amcan Transport Hiring Drivers - Anderson, SC

Amcan Transport is looking to hire 52 long distance drivers. If hired, drivers will receive a $1250 bonus after the first trip and an additional $1250 after 60 days. They are looking for experienced drivers who can either be owner operators or drive a company truck. I'm writing this post because if you mention my dad as a referral, he will also receive the same bonus if his referral is hired.

Amcan is a part of the Greatwide family of transport companies. They are located off Hwy 81 at I-85 exit 27 in Anderson, SC. You can visit their website at www.am-cantransport.com

My dad has been there for 8 years. He had a pretty drastic change of occupation after Alice Mfg in Easley, SC shut down. He had worked there for 35 years and was luckily able to get his CDL license just before they doors closed. He's been working for Amcan ever since. They have been extremely good to him over the years.

If you are interested, call 1-800-845-9722. Please mention Donald Miller as a referral.

Please share with your friends and family members. Thanks!!

Avonwalk.org Fearless Fundraiser - Angie Kimball

Are you IN IT TO END IT? Everyone has a personal reason for participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It may be a sister, mother, best friend, or even yourself, or the man in your life. But for 2 days and 39 miles, FEARLESS FUNDRAISERS are all walking together toward one goal...to end this deadly disease.

Each Walker commits to raising a minimum of $1,800 in donations. My close friend Angie Kimball is participating in the Charlotte Walk on October 22-23, 2011. She needs your help. Please consider making a donation in her name so that she may meet her goal!

Tonight, I was out with my friends, one of which is a Lymphoma survivor. We were celebrating her birthday and another year together as best friends! I recently had my own breast related scare (luckily without problem) and we got to talking about how emotionally and physically draining a health issue can be. My own experience was but a glance at what a cancer survivor must go through and I greatly respect their bravery and strength to endure.

That is why I have pledged $50 to Angie's cause. You can also help by going visiting her donation page at Avonwalk.org

"The money we raise will provide women and men the breast cancer screening, support and treatment they need regardless of their ability to pay. It will also help power leading-edge research teams across the country, fueling their quest for a cure — all because of you! Are you IN IT TO END IT?" - www.avonwalk.org

Please help support my friend Angie with her pledge to reach $1800 for the Avon Walk in Charlotte, NC on October 22-23, 2011.

Many Thanks!

Customer Spotlight ~ Dukes Football, Gloucester High School

One of the services available at Net-Maven.com is mapping your custom web address to an existing Google Site. About a week ago I had the opportunity to work on a domain setup for the Glouchester High football team.

Randy is one of the team's coaches and he's got a really nice Google Site set up to share information about the Glouchester Dukes roster, schedules, results, pictures, and announcements. But he was having problems getting it mapped to the site he had created for the team.

"You are amazing!  Thank you for your persistence.  Google Sites should have a link directly to Net Maven.  I grew frustrated at attempting to map my newly purchased domain name to my newly created website.  I tried following detailed instructions from forums and other sites without success.  Net Maven came to the rescue.  Cami was absolutely wonderful to deal with.  She kept me informed during the process and solved my issues.  Thank you and I will most certainly recommend your services to my friends.  Sincerely, Randy Applegate - Gloucester, Virginia"

It took me a few evenings and searching through help forums to figure out what was wrong. The domain registrar NameCheap.com was rather easy to set up but something was causing problems on the Google side. It ended up being an old Google Apps account linked to www.dukesfootball.com that somebody else had created and did not close after the domain name expired. When Randy came along and purchased the domain, he had no knowledge of this old account. I was able to unlock it by proving his ownership to the domain and removing the offending entry.

Let me say that I am honored that I could be of assistance and that Randy chose me to help complete his setup. He was thoughtful and patient as I ran into a more complicated situation than I first realized. The challenge resulted in some really good experience for me as well as a happy customer!

Go to http://www.dukesfootball.com to learn more about the Glouchester Dukes.

Go to Google Sites Setup Service to learn more about how I can assist with your setup.

Never email yourself a file again!

I read through articles every day over at two of my favorite websites: Lifehacker & MakeUseOf. There are frequently posts about many ways Dropbox can be used to save photos, videos, and music online which can then be shared easily or kept private. Up until recently I didn't really think I needed anything like this until I started designing this website. Most of my site is built on the Google Sites and Blogger platforms. Free storage with Google limited to 1GB unless you upgrade to a paid account. I realized that Dropbox might be a good way to expand my storage capacity to support Net-Maven, so I started looking into how it worked. I was surprised to find a simple and easy to access service!

So what is DropBox?

Dropbox is a free service that lets you store photos, docs, and videos which can kept private or shared easily with family or friends. Any file you save to your account will automatically save to all your computers, mobile devices, as well as the Dropbox website. Never email yourself a file again! Manage your files with Windows / Mac desktop or by free apps available for iOS device, Android, and Blackberry. Dropbox is also useful as a place to backup your files online and can be used to quickly restore files in case of loss.

Each new account starts with 2GB of storage space for free and you have the ability to add an additional 8GB via friend referrals (or up to 16GB explained below).

Now what?

Please consider using my Dropbox Referral link to sign up so we both get a 250MB bonus! You will be directed to a Welcome to Dropbox! page that includes a very good overview video and registration form. Fill in the form and click "Register". The website will take you step by step through to the desktop software installation.

When you're finished you will have a Dropbox folder on your computer that acts like any other folder, except it syncs everything inside to your Dropbox account. Drag and drop…that's it. You can access files from any of your connected devices or directly from Dropbox.com.

Want more space?

The first thing I started checking into after registering was how to get more space for free. Here are a few ways you can use start increasing your capacity from the 2GB provided.

1. Refer a Friend - Send your friends or family an invitation so that they can use your Dropbox Referral link so you both a 250MB bonus!

2. Getting Started - Once you sign up done forget to complete the Get Started check list to get another 250MB.

3. Add .edu Email - When you have a .edu email added to your account, every friend referral will double the bonus to 500MB each. Retroactive!! Go to http://www.dropbox.com/edu to find out more. The best thing about this option is that your referral limit is increased from 8GB to 16GB.

4. Social Networking - You can get up to 640MB when you go to http://www.dropbox/free and connect your Facebook or Twitter account, Follow them on Twitter, Tweet, or just tell them why you like Dropbox. Easy and it doesn't take away from your Referral quota.

5. Special Events - Dropbox occasionally offers promotional bonus storage (recently a Scavenger Hunt)

Net-Maven Recommends:

I've really been impressed with how simplistic Dropbox can be and still provide a good platform to share and store files. You don't have to install any elaborate software on your computer access your stuff. A single folder on your desktop is all you have to worry with and it works just like any other folder. Sharing with family, friends, or co-workers also couldn't be easier. Invite them to sign up for a Dropbox account, share your folder with them, and any time you add something on your computer to this shared folder it will show up automatically on their computer.

I do believe that the paid storage is a little pricey but if you're using it as a business it might justify the price. The free account is plenty for the average user, especially since you have the ability to increase your storage capacity by various means.

Questions or Comments?

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at info@net-maven.com.

If you decide to use the referral link above, I thank you for the bonus storage and hope you enjoy using Dropbox!
